Byrd Is The Word, Washington Brews New Win Streak

.
Listen to Charlie and Dave discuss new Nationals outfielder Marlon Byrd:
Nationals outfield Marlon Byrd did a little better in the first game with his new team than Endy Chavez did a night before, getting three hits including a long double of the wall in left and driving in three as the Nationals whacked the Brewers, 5-2

Marlon Byrd Swinging For The Fence
Tony Armas is proving that he may be the savior for the decimated pitching staff, pitching 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, striking out 3 and lowering his ERA to 3.55. The Nats pitching staff is now a solid 1 through 5, giving the team an opportunity to win every night they play. Gary Mejewski was a little shaky in the 8th inning, but Luis Ayala pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 2nd save of the season.
Vinny Castilla hit his first homerun since the initial homestand in April. He collected a total of 3 hits and saw his batting average, in the .340 range just a few weeks ago, rise to 307. The homerun was the 4th of the year, keeping him on pace to hit 20, a goal most thought obtainable when he was signed last fall. Jose Guillen went hitless and saw his batting average drop below .300 for the first time since the beginning of the season.
Tony Armas might has been the final piece of the puzzle in the transformation from a decent club to a good team. If the team can continue to win with slugger Jose Vidro sidelined with good pitching and quality defense, imagine what will happen when Jose returns, and both Christian Guzman and Jose Guillen return to health.
The Team has now won three in a row after losing a season high 3 in a row, indicative of just how scrappy this team really is.
