MEET THE BREWERS

d
The Milwaukee Brewers, along with the Pirates and the Nationals, have been the surprise team in the major leagues this year [I leave out the Diamondbacks because of their spending spree last fall]. Let's take a look at the 2005 Brew Crew:

1B] Lyle Overbay 333 - 7 - 25
Not the prototypical first basemen ... below average power yet has capacity to drive in runs ... good eye keeps him from striking out much, adding to his status as a quality contact hitter ... has had poor 2nd half each of his professional seasons ... currently has .471 OBP

2B] Junior Spivey .250 - 3 - 14
A traditional slap hitter with speed in the mold of Seattle's Ichrio ... good power against left handers ... can't turn on some right-handers, often strikes out instead ... steady but unspectacular

SS] Bill Hall 284 - 2 - 8
Decent power with good speed for small framed infielder ... hits well with runners on ... no plate discipline and strikes out a good deal ... below average fielder

3B] Russell Branyan 260 - 5 - 15
Prototypical muscular longball hitter, can change game with single swing of his bat or end a threat by striking out ... clobbers lefthanders but does only so-so against righties ... doesn't light up the scoreboard with runners in scoring position

LF] Carlos Lee .257 - 6 - 28
Sweet swing with tremendous bat speed ... has never done well with pitch selection and patience at the plate ... as far as defense, well, the American League created the DL with guys like Carols in mind

CF] Brady Clark .333 - 4 - 18
Great poise at the plate ... line drive hitter who drives the ball to all parts of the park ... seldom strikes out and walks often ... doesn't do particularly well against lefthanders

RF] Geoff Jenkins .248 - 4 - 12
Fastball hitter and little else ... beginning to become a good baserunner ... needs more patience and has to be able to hit lefties better

C] Damian Miller .292 - 1 - 8
Strong defensive catcher ... but offensively, strikes out too much, usually in bunches ... very streaky hitter ... has occasional power
Lee and Jenkins are disappointing this year so far, they are hitting at least 35 pts below their averages each.
Spivey should never be mentioned in the same breath as Ichiro, that one gave me a good laugh.
