So Close ... So Close And Yet So Far

So Close ...
The Washington Nationals are beginning to make the kinds of mistakes that lead to losing streaks. That said, they came so close to coming back and finishing off the Cubs in the 9th inning, loading the bases before Jose Guillen flied out to deep rightfield to end the game.
When the team was injury free, they were a force that could win any game on any night. This evening, instead of Jose Vidro and Christian Guzman, both all-stars, was Henry Mateo and Jamie Carroll. The middle relief has been decimated and the few qualified relievers are becoming too tired too early in the season. Luis Ayala pitched in a league high 21st appearance.
Vinny Castilla's throw home in the 8th inning bounced of catcher Gary Barnett's glove for an error, allowing the go ahead run to score. Chad Cordero's high throw over Nick Johnson allowed the final two Cubs runs to score. Of the Cubs 6 runs, 3 were earned, meaning that the game should have at worst gone into extra innings.
The Nationals will continue to have problems until some of their 10 players start returning from the disabled list. This is a team with a frozen payroll, and losses will have to accumulate until a new owner is chosen. I still believe that the Nationals will end the season .500, but without these injuries, they could have done so much more.
NATS NOTES:
Gary Bennett continues his offensive production with two more hits, raising his average to .294 .... Esteban Loiaza pitched 7 innings, giving up 2 runs and lowering his ERA to 3.54 .... An excellent crowd of almost 37,000 watched the game at RFK Stadium .... Continuing a trend of untimely hitting, the Nats left another 9 men on base .... Tony Blanco got a pinch hit single ... Christian Guzman returned to the lineup as a replacement for Jamie Carroll who took over at second base when Henry Mateo was pinch hit for.
