BIRDS OF A FEATHER: Patterson To Orioles

[January 9th] -- Not having Corey Patterson a member of the Washington Nationals has made me happy. Having him become a Baltimore Oriole has me downright giddy.

Earlier today, word was beginning to spread that several Chicagoland media outlets thought a Corey Patterson - Alfonso Soriano trade was brewing. Just a few minutes ago, however, the Nationals, their fans and all of Washington were spared the idignity of having a leadoff hitter with a career .293 on-base percentage. The Cubs ended up trading Patterson to the Baltimore Orioles for two minor leaguers, Nate Spears (.294-6-41 at Class 'A' Frederick) and Carlos Perez (11-8, 4.28 at Class 'A' Delmarva).

So, Alfonso Soriano was going to Chicago for Patterson and a second-tier pitcher, but all they get from the Orioles are two minor leaguers? It's obvious that any deal involving Corey Patterson and Alfonso Soriano was just wishful thinking by the Cubs.

Whew. That was a close one.
